In this first session Martine took us through the structure of the module and the plans for this Experimental Film and Video strand.
Martine explained about the upcoming exercises and assessment pieces that we will be required to produce and the deadlines and presentation dates for each task.
As a group we had a discussion about what identifies a film as experimental. Such traits as non-conformist, unconventional sometimes abstract filming techniques, non-linear narrative structure, and film being personal / subjective view of film maker.
We then watched the short film The Perfect Human, 1967 directed by Jorgen Leth and the film The Five Obstructions, 2003 directed by Lars Von Trier in which Von Trier challenges Leth to remake his film The Perfect Human five times with different limitations each time.
At the end of the session Martine asked us to bring in a USB next week with a film that shows my interest in experimental film. I am going through some of my DVDs and the links that are given in the module guide reading list to choose my film to bring in.
