Animation at Bradford National Media Museum

I love visiting the National Media Museum (formerly the Museum of Film and Television) in Bradford and particularly like the animation gallery.

The museum has examples of the different styles of animation that we were discussing in our session this week.

These are some of the photos that I took on my last visit to the museum.  They show good examples of some of the animation styles that we discussed in our group.

One of the models exhibited is one created and used by Ray Harryheusen.

"Ray Harryhausen is a world-renowned master of stop-motion animation famous for bringing mythical creatures to life in films such as Jason and the Argonauts (1963) and Clash of the Titans (1981)."  National Media Museum

The National Media Museum has agreed to acquire Harryheusen's personal collection for display in the museum until April 2013.

I was lucky enough to see the big Harryheusen Exhibition at the London Film Museum in September 2010.  I was amazed at the vast difference in sizes of the models.  Some, like the one that is in the National Media Museum were only a few inches high, whilst others were several feet tall.  Yet they all had an amazing level of intricacy in their detail.

It was also whilst I was in the London Film Museum that I became a bit obsessed with the 1924 film The Fugiutive Futurist from which this still is taken.  I love the idea of Tower Bridge being used as a monorail stop andthe Thames being drained to allow for rail transport.  You'll notice that it is the picture that I used for the background of this blog.  It's such a good image.
